A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose

Author: Eckhart Tolle

"Not all unhappiness is of the pain-body. Some of it is new unhappiness, created whenever you are out of alignment with the present moment, when the Now is denied in some way or another. When you recognize that the present moment is always the case and therefore inevitable, you can bring in an uncompromising inner 'yes' to it and so not only create no further unhappiness, but, with inner resistance gone, find yourself empowered by Life itself."

Stop Fighting the Now—It’s Undefeated Anyway

Let’s get real for a second: The present moment is like that one friend who always shows up uninvited. You didn’t ask for it, you didn’t plan for it, but there it is, standing in your living room, eating your snacks. And no matter how much you wish it would leave, it’s not going anywhere. The present moment is always the case. So, why are we so bad at just letting it be?

Here’s the deal: A lot of our unhappiness isn’t because life is throwing flaming dodgeballs at us (though, sometimes it is). It’s because we’re out of sync with what’s happening right now. We’re either wishing we were somewhere else, doing something else, or being someone else. Basically, we’re arguing with reality—and spoiler alert, reality always wins. Every. Single. Time.

Think about it: How much energy do we waste resisting the present moment? Complaining about traffic, dreading a meeting, wishing it wasn’t Monday. It’s like trying to fight gravity—it’s exhausting, pointless, and you’re still stuck on the ground. But what if, instead of resisting, you just said, “Alright, fine. This is what’s happening. Let’s roll with it”?

That’s where the magic happens. When you stop saying “no” to the now and bring in an inner “yes,” something shifts. You’re no longer wasting energy fighting what already is. Instead, you’re working with it. And suddenly, life feels a little less like a battle and a little more like a dance. (Okay, maybe a clumsy dance, but still.)

Here’s the kicker: When you stop resisting the present moment, you don’t just avoid creating more unhappiness—you actually tap into a weird kind of power. It’s like life itself gives you a high-five and says, “Finally, you’re getting it.” You’re no longer stuck in a mental tug-of-war with reality, and that frees up a ton of energy to actually deal with what’s in front of you.

Now, I’m not saying this is easy. Saying “yes” to the now when the now sucks is like trying to hug a cactus—it’s uncomfortable, and your brain will probably scream, “Why are we doing this?!” But the alternative is staying stuck in a loop of resistance, frustration, and unhappiness. And honestly, who has time for that?

So, the next time you catch yourself grumbling about the present moment, try this: Take a deep breath, acknowledge what’s happening, and mentally say, “Yes, this is it.” You don’t have to like it, but you can stop fighting it. And who knows? You might just find that life gets a little easier when you stop trying to wrestle it into submission.

Because let’s face it: The now is undefeated. You might as well join its team.
